Dust consists of a complex mixture of particles with a wide range of size and highly variable chemical compositions. Due to the lack of a universal method applicable for all questions, the guidance and consulting on dust issues represent a key component.  Only an optimized approach well adapted to the question of interest delivers the expected results.


In situ measurements

In situ measurements can deliver an important indication of dust concentrations and eventually its grain size distribution. In most of the cases, however, these measurements do not allow the identification of the contaminant source.

Sample collection

The way of sampling is dependent on the specific question and planned subsequent analyses. At this point it has to be defined which is the most convenient sampling surface (type of substrate), on which the particles will be deposited. The analyses that should be performed (qualitative or quantitative) should be defined prior to sample collection, as well.

Analyses / Data Treatment / Interpretation

There are two basic methods available on the market. On the one hand, bulk analysis, which deliver a generalized result involving all sampled particles without going into details regarding the shape, size and chemical composition of each single particle. With bulk analysis only selected compounds (e.g. soot, single heavy metals) can be determined chemically.

On the other hand, with single particle analysis the information obtained for each particle contributes to the result. Based on single or the combination of various parameters such as grain size, shape and elemental composition chemical compounds can be differentiated and quantified.

Measures / actions

With the results obtained from the above mentioned consulting, sampling and analytical steps the source of the particles can be detected. When the source/sources and the specific situation at a specific site are known, measures/actions for a reduction of the contaminant can be proposed.  If the problem is related to exceeding immission values it can be transferred to the responsible department/competence center (e.g. Department of Environmental Protection). This is obliged - according to law - to handle.
